NC1 NC2 NC3 Which to BuyFree

MrMiata house reference

Buy an NC2 (2009-2012) if you want the best all-round NC: the strongest engine, the mid-life chassis and interior updates, and styling that has aged well. NC1 is the value pick, NC3 the most refined.

The NC ran three visual and mechanical phases. All share the 2.0 LF-VE, a timing chain (no belt), a non-interference valvetrain, and the NC-only 5x114.3 bolt pattern.

PhaseYearsKey traits
NC12006-2008Original smiling grille, softer engine, cheapest to buy
NC22009-2012Restyled nose, stronger engine, revised suspension tune
NC32013-2015Aero nose, updated wheels/interior trim, most refined

The headline change is at NC2. The 2009 refresh brought a strengthened bottom end (forged crankshaft, revised rods and pistons), a higher redline on the 6-speed cars, and an oil cooler on many. That makes NC2/NC3 the better base for spirited or track use.

Which to buy

Across all three, prioritise service history over cosmetics. A well-kept NC1 beats a neglected NC3. Check rear main seal weeping, cooling condition, and (on PRHT cars) that the roof cycles cleanly.
