Mazda MX-5 Miata VIN decoder

Reads what a 17-character Mazda VIN encodes — the model year, the assembly plant, and which generation (NA, NB, NC, ND). US-market MX-5 VINs even carry the chassis code (JM1NA…, NB, NC, ND) right in the VIN. Engine and trim aren't fully in the VIN; where to find them is explained below.

What the VIN can and can't tell you

The VIN reliably gives the year, plant and generation. The exact engine, trim and colour are on the data plate in the driver's door jamb, not decodable from the VIN alone:

  • The paint code is on the door-jamb plate — match it on a Mazda paint chart.
  • Within a generation, the engine is fixed (NA: 1.6 then 1.8; NB: 1.8; NC/ND: 2.0), but trim and options are on the plate.
  • For anything the VIN can't answer, ask MrMiata — paste the VIN into the app and it decodes it in the conversation.
