The NC is an excellent, affordable track and autocross car: light, balanced, forgiving, and non-interference so a mechanical mistiming will not bend valves. Sort cooling, brakes and suspension first, then chase power.
Start with an NC2/NC3 6-speed for the stronger engine and, ideally, the factory oil cooler; it gives you margin on hot days.
